Rating Snapshot

Rated 4 out of 5 by from looks good, but... I bought the 1000 and 500 for a longer run. I plumbed mine. It starts off nice with about 8" flames, but after about 10 or 20 minutes, the flames shrink down to about 3-6". If I add rocks, I will see much less. Also, half of the 1000 (which is two linear displays) doesn't look as good as the other half. Actually, the 500 looks the best. You do need to make sure the walls or enclosure is flat black. Otherwise you see orange on the walls.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Realistic, some minor set backs though Overall, this is a pretty amazing unit for a space that just cant have a real fireplace, or if a real fireplace just doesnt make sense. I gave it 4/5 stars for reasons below. We bought the enclosed 40" unit (which is 2 cartridges linked side to side) with heater and installed it with glass on 2 sides and the house plumb kit. I live in Georgia, where we run the A/C 8 months out of the year and a real fireplace would be working pointlessly against the A/C already struggling to cope with the Georgia summer heat. This unit allows you to run what looks like a real fire, except without any heat (if you choose). There is also a 5000 btu heater/fan which is surprisingly efficient at heating a smaller space quickly which can be turned on and off via the remote as needed, for all those snowmaggedon nights. I will 2nd what the 1st reviewer said in regards to flame height - after 10-20 min it really does shrink down, i think that is because the small orange halogens are heating the space up and the mist is evaporating much quicker in the higher temps. That's just thermodynamics. However, why not put some river rock around, and then some driftwood over part of the flame. You can also use the included spacers to block the mist and force it towards the center, to make it more realistic. Also you can increase the fan speed some to push the mist higher. Although you probably already tried that. Im pretty happy with the flame quality for most part using spacers and some driftwood for effect. Speaking of realistic, this is probably the closest you can get to a real flame. People actually freak out when they see me reach into the mist, thinking im going to burn my hand. Just for fun, I set it up in front of a big window in the 2nd floor of our house and went and looked at it from the street at night. It looked like the place was burning down lol. So, very realistic, really neat how they do this. This is certainly a unit worth considering. So what could make this better ? 1. The speaker crackle is super unrealistic. It sounds like a fake flame crackle in an echo chamber. I always disable it via the remote button, and may go into the board and just unplug the tiny speakers. They are definitely horrible and echo off the metal enclosure. 2. Why not offer several colors on the halogens ? How cool would it be to switch from orange to red to blue, to green with the push of a button on the remote ? This should be easy and would add even more wow factor. Who the heck has a green flame fireplace that looks this real ?! 3. The water trickle ... is really annoying. I know why they have the fake speaker crackle, there is too much water sound trickling in a quiet room. It also echos off the metal enclosure and is really annoying. If this cant be resolved via some water routing under the mist cover, why not make the heater fan able to run without the heater element, so that adds some noise (but not heat when you dont want heat) ? The heater fan actually helps draw the mist larger since it creates a vacuum and pulls the air mist up towards top of box. Win win. I also think a fan running on your "fireplace" adds a bit of realism. Speaking of that heater - why not allow that to discharge on both sides ? How hard would it be to have a removable baffle that directs the heated air to 1 side, the other, or both ? Its sort of silly to only discharge the heat on 1 side when you have a 2 sided set up. Whatever, this isnt a big deal for me since you dont use this for heat all that much, but it would be nice. Seems like Dimplex stopped short on this feature, and the heater itself is actually VERY capable to heat a smaller space quickly. 4. The customer service - is very hard to connect with. You have to call, and then wait for a call back, which could be days. The online retailers dont have a clue about this thing, they just direct you to Dimplex. They are totally swamped with service calls and totally understaffed. However ... once they DO finally call you back, you will receive EXCELLENT service. I spent HOURS on the phone below, but in the end was totally satisfied. At 1 time I did ask to speak to a manager before reaching an actual tech. The manager was perpetually on break and I never got 1. That was pretty frustrating after spending nearly $4K on this thing. 5. Long term reliability = ?? What they have done here is taken the 400,000 year old basic concept of fire and turned it into a NASA project with circuit boards, level sensors, ultrasonic misters, halogens, ect ... Im just not confident how long all that stuff will last. The 1st unit I received had a whole bunch of issues. The secondary side had a bad water level sensor, so it wouldn't run even with the manual water tank. No matter what water level, it kept thinking it was too low. Also, the secondary side had the water inlet solenoid (for house plumb kit) unplugged from the board itself. It took me literally 10 hours on the phone with Dimplex and messing with the thing to figure both of those issues out. And actually, the E fireplace store just sent me a whole new 40" cartridge (which has worked perfectly from the get go). I guess time will tell how reliable this thing is, theres alot going on here that could break. And Dimplex needs to QC these things before they leave the factory. Stuff not plugged into the circuit board is NOT a shipping issue ... its an assembly issue. OK so .. would I buy this thing again -- YES I would. Its absolutely amazing that you can stick this thing into any wall that is 14" (or thinner if you just buy the cartridge and build your own enclosure). You can get real creative, put it high up on a ceiling, daisy chain a few together and run around a room, under a fish tank, in the middle of your coffee table, circular walls? ect ... It definitely looks real enough. I would suggest putting this at or above eye level if possible, if you look down into this you can kinda see the halogen lights and it looses its realism. Also, this WONT work outside, or anywhere super drafty (unless your enclosure is nearly air tight). The mist is very fine and much lighter than actual smoke, so it will lay flat or discharge in any cross wind. The enclosure is important. I think if Dimplex improves on the 1-4 items above, and reliability turns out good, this is a winner. Someone very creative came up with this thing and I think it could also be made a whole lot better if they wanted. Unfortunately, I think e-fireplaces have gotten such a bad rap by now that the damage may be irreversible for a while. There are lots of horrible, moving screen type e-fireplaces out there that look awful. But this 1 is a legit replacement for a real fireplace and is definitely worth taking a close look at if you could consider an e fireplace.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from We love our Options-myst! We wanted something open on 3 sides for a modern space! This is perfect.....mostly because it really LOOKS like actual fire. We use the more rustic logs in the fall/winter and switch to stones in the summer. Our builder had not installed one before....but they were really impressed with how it turned out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing effect! Horrible sound haha This is really the best looking electric fireplace. We live in Quebec, Canada where we need to use humidifier during the winter season. We use this unit as our main humidifier! There should be an option to mute the fireplace crackling sound by default though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing. But some minor things could make it better + amazing and realistic effect + people cannot believe it is not a real flame + Amazes eveyone that sees it - The crackling sound is too fake - there should be a sleep button like on TVs especially useful when you have it in your bedroom.
